Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are porcelain shells bonded to the front of your permanent teeth. They make your smile more symmetrical and cover minor oral imperfections like chips, spaces, and discoloration.

If you chip a front tooth, Dr. Gleaner might recommend a single veneer. Even so, most people get six or eight because an even number results in a more balanced smile.

Who can benefit from veneers?

You might benefit from veneers if you have cosmetic concerns about your smile, including:

  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Pointy or unusually shaped teeth
  • Teeth with gaps between them

You might also benefit from porcelain veneers if you have discolored teeth and they don’t respond to teeth whitening treatment.

What is the process for getting veneers?

Getting veneers takes two appointments scheduled about a week apart.

Before recommending veneers, Dr. Gleaner conducts an oral exam and orders a series of X-rays. If your teeth are healthy and there aren’t any cavities present, Dr. Gleaner numbs your mouth and prepares your teeth to receive the veneers. To do that, he uses special tools to remove a thin layer of enamel from each of your teeth.

Next, Dr. Gleaner takes impressions of your teeth and sends the impressions to a manufacturing facility. Design technicians at the facility use your impressions to create a custom set of veneers that match the exact shade of your natural tooth enamel.

When your veneers are finished, you return to Dr. Gleaner’s office. Dr. Gleaner bonds the porcelain veneers to your permanent teeth and provides care instructions. You leave the office with a beautiful, white Hollywood-worthy smile.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers typically last 12-15* years, but they can last longer if you practice good oral hygiene. Dr. Gleaner and the team recommend brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the office every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.

To protect your veneers from damage, wear a mouthguard when playing sports, try not to grind your teeth, and avoid bad habits like opening packaging with your teeth or biting your fingernails.
